Washington Township

When I first attended a Washington Township Board meeting, I was just a concerned citizen facing issues with poor road drainage near my home. At that time, I didn’t fully understand the breadth of the board's responsibilities. Now, as Township Clerk, I’m here to provide you with a clear understanding of our township and how your property taxes are spent.

Washington Township's expenditures are focused on three key areas: maintaining our roads, ensuring effective fire protection, and managing local elections. Understanding these functions highlights why the role of Township Supervisor is non-partisan and underscores the importance of electing leaders who will manage your tax dollars wisely.

I believe it is important to offer transparency and keep you informed, so you can cast your vote with confidence and knowledge.

Roads

Most of our tax dollars are allocated to maintaining roads.  In Minnesota, prompt snow removal is both costly and essential for winter safety.  During the summer, our focus shifts to grading gravel roads and upkeeping paved ones.  If elected to the Board of Supervisors, I would also aim to address road drainage issues to ensure they do not negatively impact private property or our lakes.

Fire Contracts

Our general fund tax dollars are primarily spent on fire contracts with the Cleveland Fire Department and the Madison Lake Fire Department. By splitting these contracts, we ensure prompt response times, which can positively impact your homeowners insurance premiums. Maintaining strong relationships with both fire departments is crucial for the safety of our citizens.

Elections

Restoring trust in our elections is important.  In Washington Township, decisions about voting methods—whether in-person or by mail—have been contentious. During last year's voting survey, I advocated for a public comment section to ensure that registered voters had a voice. I was disappointed that these concerns were not fully addressed by either side. We need a Supervisor who will genuinely listen to the people and rely on facts to rebuild trust in our electoral process.
